Is A Guinea Pig A Good First Pet/Good Pets For Children?
Well, not necessarily.
The workload
You see, guinea pigs require a lot more work than the average person would think. They poop. A LOT. I don’t even think that you understand what I mean. You would have to see it to understand. Click here for video reference, and just a better overall understanding of just how much work it is owning a guinea pig.
It’s costly
If you think that it would be easy to support a guinea pig, well, it depends.
One to two guinea pigs can cost anywhere from $73- $124 dollars per month. And I’m not saying it can’t go higher. But I am saying that if you want your guinea pig to live a long and happy life, it can’t go lower. Check out section ‘Diet’ to see what else needs to be on your shopping list! So, getting a guinea pig may not just be up to you. It may be up to your savings as well.
Time
Not only is it costly, but it is very time-consuming. Actually, I’ve never seen a chore that is more time-consuming than this. And this also falls into the category of why guinea pigs are not good pets/presents for children. In fact, I am a minor myself, and I have WAAAYY too much homework to clean these cages every night, so my mom will clean them every night (shout out to you, mom!). Sometimes on the weekend I can help out, though:).
But, if you think that you can handle a guinea pig, I promise all the love and pleasure you get out of it is more than worth it. They are so gentle, loveable and sociable.
BE WARNED: IF YOU DO END UP GETING A GUINEA PIG FOR YOUR CHILDREN, DO YOUR REASERCH AND BE PREPAIRED TO DO MOST IF NOT ALL OF THE WORK.
Have a good day.
Good afternoon, what is the average life expectancy of a guinea pig?
Hello, Niki! The average life expectancy of a guinea pig, if you care for them properly, is 5-7 years.
